The Development of Mental Health Services and Systems for Children and Adolescents
Ahn Dong-Hyun

Abstract
The mental disorders in children and adolescents are yet ill-defined than ones in adults, and are different from the major problems of adulthood such as schizophrenia and major depressive disorder. But recent studies suggest that between 10 and 15 percent suffer from some type of diagnosable mental disorder. Mental health services for children and adolescents are provided through various institutions that belong to the mental health, general health, social welfare, education, and juvenile justice systems. Recently policy-makers designed to improve systems for service delivery for children and adolescents with severe mental disorders. In 1998, the International Association for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions(IACAPAP) suggest the guidelines for mental health services and systems for children and adolescents. I suggest the guideline for the development of mental health services and systems for children and adolescents in Korea, as follows£º1) prevention efforts for risk factors of mental disorders in children and adolescents£»2) optimal approaches for defining, assessing, and diagnosing mental disorders in children and adolescents£»3) the determination and dissemination of effective treatment techniques and preventive intervention for mental disorders£»4) improvement of the systems for service delivery for children and adolescents with severe mental disorders£»5) integration of the systems for mental health service delivery for children and adolescents and for adults.
